I’ve wanted to write this piece for a long time because I believe this personal lesson as an entrepreneur can help many other founders in the development of their teams and ventures.

After a startup or small company creates its first product or service, gets some initial traction, and is ready to scale, the need for more seniority in the team becomes evident. Sometimes, this is driven by pressure from investors or clients to have a functional product while managing very limited resources like capital.

To save money, many founders opt to hire young, enthusiastic, and mid-level professionals to execute the daily tasks. This is logical, they want hard work, but with a low burn rate.

But building complex hardware-software ecosystems isn't just about managing a project management software backlog. It requires strategic vision. When you hire for pure execution and skip strategic leadership, you create the Seniority Gap. Execution happens, but strategy drifts.

The trap of the "low-burn" junior PM

As an early-stage startup founder, I know the enormous constraints and challenges these companies face. Often, momentum is mistaken for progress. In these types of organizations, there is rarely a dedicated Product Manager (PM), for example. Founders and managers often work 50-hour weeks, juggling sales, fundraising, and networking.

A junior PM, stepping into this chaos, might lack experience in highly relevant strategic topics. They might prioritize a slick software feature that requires a last-minute change to the PCB layout or the external housing. They might approve an enclosure design without understanding the tooling constraints for injection molding or the environmental realities of an agricultural field.

Fixing a mistake in a CAD file or a Figma board costs nothing but time. Fixing that same mistake after you've cut steel for a mold, or worse, after units are deployed to the market, costs tens of thousands of dollars and months of runway.

Discover the Fractional Leader Alternative

This is where the Fractional C-Level Professional model changes the financial and strategic planning for early-stage founders.

Startups like Hexagro, which I founded, assume they cannot afford a Senior Leader because a full-time C-Level Executive commands a high salary plus significant equity and benefits. This is a heavy burden for an early-stage company, a reality that is only partially solved through experienced mentors and advisors.

But here is the truth: mentors and advisors are not aware of the day-to-day reality of the company, and they rarely get their "hands dirty" with active work. From my perspective, early-stage startups don't need 40-hour C-Level professionals either.

Early-stage startups typically need around 10 hours per week of this caliber of experience. It is not a part-time role; it is a high-leverage intervention. They need an expert to set the strategy and align the product team with the commercial team to hit their goals without losing focus.

A fractional leader gives you top-tier strategic oversight for the cost of a mid-level hire. You pay strictly for strategic output and advanced expertise to de-risk your roadmap, without the corporate overhead you want to avoid.

Offering a Frugal Alternative to Product Management and Strategic Planning

This exact realization is why I launched Frugal Studio. Through the experience I’ve developed over the years, my network of high-end professionals, and my consulting collaborations, I realized I can make a much bigger impact in these organizations as a fractional leader.

You don't need another full-time salary burning your runway, but you cannot afford to neglect your strategy, or worse, not have one at all.

As a Fractional Product Leader, I evaluate the Product Requirements and Specifications according to the company strategy, the Strategic Plan (with its respective OKRs, KPIs, and Initiatives), and the team's structure and capacity to execute to bring solutions to the table and execute them. You need a partner to jump in, get their hands dirty for a few highly-focused hours per week, and de-risk your path to scale.

Is your team preparing to transition from prototype to production? Don't let the Seniority Gap slow you down. Read more about my services, or reach out directly to explore how my Fractional services can help you today.
